The Angel Oak

I learned something today about a tree that actually bears a name. The Angel Oak is a 400-year-old tree located near Charleston, South Carolina. If the age estimate is correct, it dates to the early 1600’s. It stands 66.5 feet tall, measures 28 feet in circumference, and produces shade that covers 17,200 square feet. Its longest branch is 187 feet long. It is registered with the Live Oak Society. (Despite its legacy, there are a number of bald cypress trees across the South that are hundreds of years older.)
