It didn’t take long for presumptive Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton to do what Democrats always do when campaigning for office: she tried to scare the pants off black voters by making the totally baseless, meritless claim that Republicans are attempting to suppress their votes. Like that’s never been tried before. I mean, you can say a lot of things about Democrats. Originality is not one of them.
Down in Texas for a campaign event aimed at restoring her relationship with black Democrats who rejected her 2008 candidacy, Clinton said that laws requiring voters to show identification at polls were part of “a sweeping effort to disempower and disenfranchise people of color, poor people and young people from one end of our country to the other.”
Democrats do this for two reasons. First, no one projects like Democrats project. Democrats are notorious for accusing the GOP of things that Democrats do themselves. Second, Democrats oppose voter ID laws not because getting ID cards causes an undue hardship for minority voters, but because it makes it harder for Democrats to cheat in elections. Similarly, the GOP favors voter ID laws to help maintain integrity at the polls.
In other words, Republicans can be honest about their reason for favoring voter ID laws. The Democrats cannot be honest about their reason for opposing them.
Honestly, you need an ID for many routine things. In no other form is producing a photo ID considered racist in any way — only voting. In this, the Democrats are telling us more about themselves than anything.
