When did it become the Republicans’ job to defend President Obama’s faith?

Donald Trump has come under attack once again, this time for refusing to correct an audience member who accused President Obama of being a Muslim. Of course, Trump is playing this perfectly. He correctly recognizes that it’s not his duty (nor the duty of any Republican) to certify President Obama’s faith. And it has aggravated me in the past the way GOP politicians have more or less fallen over each other to defend the President from claims that he is a Muslim. It has never been their job to. I mean, how is anyone supposed to know which God the President worships? It’s the President’s job to defend his own faith, and he did this back in 2008 during an interview with George Stephanopoulos.
