A science teacher at a middle school in Newtown, CT has been arrested for carrying a pistol to school despite having a valid permit. Newtown is the same town in which a school shooting took place at Sandy Hook Elementary in 2012.
Newtown stepped up its law enforcement presence in schools after the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary, placing armed officers in every building. Now there are armed school security officers in each building, many of whom are retired police officers, according to the Hartford Courant.
So they have security guards carrying weapons. But a teacher with a valid permit cannot? This makes no sense. What’s also lost in this news story is the assumption that the teacher who was charged was up to no good. But maybe he had no malintention at all. Maybe he was simply trying to avoid another Sandy Hook. If only there had been pistol-carrying teachers at all the previous school shootings.
