This morning’s Commercial Appeal column by Chris Herrington is spot-on. This is who we are:
No one is a fan of Tiger football because they think their school is going to win a national title. As I preach all the time in regard to the Grizzlies, for fans it’s about the journey, not the destination. That journey is a lot more fun, and a lot more crowded, if there’s winning along the way. But the real meaning for most fans is about the enjoyment of the enterprise itself, and the creation of Tiger Lane and improvements at the Liberty Bowl have enhanced that experience, an outdoor community party on weekends, after the summer heat has passed. If 40,000 are willing to show up for that party, its value is self-evident, and needs no one’s outside validation.
