Notes on Revelation 16:1-17

There is a series of “orderly 7’s” — seven seals, seven trumpets, seven vials. And they are poured out with increasing rapidity the deeper it gets into the tribulation.

The love of God makes no sense without the wrath of God. There is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.

It is important to point out the wrath of God because we still have the opportunity to repent.

In this context, we are getting to the last part of the 3 1/2 years that make up the “Great Tribulation.”

God strikes those who have received the mark of the beast with sores (similar to those borne by Job).

Unlike the previous judgments, these final 7 don’t give the world time to recover from one before the next is poured out.

If you trust in anything or anyone other than Jesus Christ, you will end up in Hell. If you’re wrong on salvation, you’re wrong on everything else.

Then the sea (all of it)  is turned to blood and all sea creatures die.

Then the rivers are also turned to blood. Even though the antichrist claims to be the god of the earth, God overrules him. The angel who pours out this latest wrath exhonorates God from being a bully by proclaiming Him the righteous judge of all the earth.

Indeed, those who shed the blood of the saints and the prophets are given blood to drink.

How can a loving and holy God do such things? Without His holiness, nothing else makes sense. His judgments are righteous.

Men are scorched with great heat and blaspheme the name of God. Man without God is depraved, sick & twisted. Still, they would not repent.

The kingdom of the beast is darkness and it is said “they gnawed their tongues for pain.” We aren’t sure what this judgment even is. Again, they blaspheme not the beast or the devil, but blaspheme God. Still, they will not repent of their deeds.

You will know false prophets by their fruits.

The sixth angel in their series dries up the Euphrates. The significance of this is the preparation of the way of the kings of the east. They will come in to try to destroy the nation of Israel.

Three demonic spirits come out of the dragon, the beast and the false prophet. And they will work miracles. (The devil can do this, too.) This is why Biblical discernment is so important for believers.

God is gathering forces for one great final battle. He will prove to the world that He is who He says He is. This place is known in Hebrew as Armageddon.

The seventh and final angel pours his vial into the air. And out of the air a voice comes forth proclaiming, “It is done.” This is God’s voice.
