Building blocks (2 Peter 1:19-21)

Last week we talked about the influence and authority of Scripture in our lives. The one time the word “success” is used in the Bible it pertains to the authority of the word of God. The Bible is a two-edged sword — not a letter-opener or a butter knife.

The average Christian lets the Bible sit on the shelf and wonders why his marriage is falling apart. We all want to hear God’s audible voice. All we have to do is read our Bible to know what God says.

In verse 19, Peter, who had heard God’s audible voice at Christ’s transfiguration, proclaims that God’s word is an even more sure word of prophecy.

1. The word of God has more value today than the voice of God. Pastor Locke: “I have preached in 16 difference countries, and everywhere I have been they have begged me for more Bbiles — except here in the United States.” If you are not in the word of God, you are not in the will of God.

How does He direct our path? He does it through the pages of the word of God.

The actual voice and manifested glory of God can be found in the pages of the Bible.

The only thing God ever exalted above His own name is His word. God is cranked up about His own word and it’s too bad the church isn’t.

Until Jesus comes, the Bible is the authority of God in our lives. The best thing we can do is let this book radically influence who we are.

“If you will make much of the Bible, God will make much of your life.”

2. Ignoring the teachings of Scripture will always prove detrimental. When we do our own thing it will be the wrong thing. You have to know the word before you can continue in it.

The Bible is what changes peoples lives. The only “secret sauce” we have at Global Vision Bible Church is the Bible. No prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation.

3. The Holy Spirit is our greatest teacher and He will never lead us contrary to the Bible. There is no such thing as, “This is what the Bible says to me.” The Bible is what God says. There is only one way to interpret God’s word. The text says what it says. So let the Holy Spirit be your teacher and not man.

When the Holy Spirit teaches you something, it will never contradict the word of God. Even Jesus continually referred back to the law when he was teaching.

We don’t get to make up what we think the Bible means. Sometimes the Holy Spirit teaches us something contrary to what we grew up believing.

Regardless of the chaos in which the world finds itself, the Bible will still stand on its own.

Unfortunately, there were false prophets in Peter’s day just as there are false prophets today. False prophets water down the word of God in order to make themselves and others feel better.

4. There are only two types of people: those who speak for God and those who lie for the devil. You can either go through life and graciously speak the truth of God, or you, according to the Bible, are a liar. If your life is filled with division and gossip, you are not speaking for God. You have been deceived and are deceiving others. Someone or something is always whispering to us, competing with God for our attention. We can listen to the whispers, or we can devote our attention to God and His word.
